Ute Safrin

At the end of May the artist Ute Safrin spent 10 days in our Hermitage. Ute studied sculpture in her adopted city of Berlin and had applied to us last year. She wanted to use the time at the Hermitage to try out a new material. It has succeeded in this to the fullest extent.

Normally Ute works with clay, a rather softer material. Their workshop is also designed with this in mind. To try her hand at wood as a material, she needed a new working environment. So that her clay is not covered with wood chips and dust and that she doesn't get distracted by her usual work. Ute has sketched every intermediate state of her work from all sides. This helps her to develop the sculpture. She will process the sketches later or leave them as pictures. Safrin found the wood for her sculpture on our property. We were also able to help her out with other materials. Other things she got locally at the hardware store.

On a typical day, Ute worked in the morning, enjoyed good traditional food for lunch at the canteen around the corner, and then went for a walk in the neighborhood. After 4 p.m., she went back to work. At Whitsun, she took two days off and visited the Brennabor art gallery in Brandenburg an der Havel and the gallery at lake Klostersee in Lehnin. For her trips, she often used the bus or simply walked.
