Ruth Spichtig
The Berlin artist Ruth Spichtig was mostly inspired by the storm that swept through the forest during her stay at the art residence at Rietzer Berg. The power of nature and the blown over trees that support each other even after having fallen were the model for her "giants pick-a-stick". She built this installation out of bamboo sticks that she painted like pick-a-sticks and distributed on the property of the forest garden. Just as if giants had played with it and then left it thoughtlessly. With a bit of imagination her work can be associated to humanity and current world affairs.
Another installation of the artist is a historic baby pram with document files. Its meaning is that bureaucracy starts even before a person is born and doesn't stop when someone dies. It covers everything and causes us to forget humanity and the really important things in life. That's the reason for the inscription "Housing first" – first of all, the basic needs should be met. A common topic in her art is the statement that humans abolish themselves.
The artist with Swiss roots likes to use things that she finds and puts them into a new context. That is why she abandonned her original plans to paint and built a sculpture in favor of a new plan to use bamboo and reed that she found during her stay.
For Ruth, it is important to be mindful and live in the now. For that she recomends "one-minute breaks" in which one focusses on the moment and on oneself.
